New Work

"As a Lamb to Slaughter"

Tonights Harvest

My veins were less than cooperative tonight and will leave a mark this time.  Still we we able to get what was needed.  About 50 vials.  Half way at 160 vials.

Abort Magazine

Abort Issue #14 was just released.  I am one of the featured artists.

2D Artist Magazine

The wonderful folks at 2D Magazine have graciously allowed me to post a link for free to my article in the Sketchbook feature of the December issue.  They also have a free lite version of the current issue as well.

Artist Statement

Flesh and Blood”

“Flesh and Blood” was the hardest and yet easiest series for me to paint of my entire career. Hardest due to the brutal nature in which I viewed the mirror. Easiest in so far as the flow was natural, unstudied and for the first time born of only my sketches. My past work was usually the result of working from photographs or working directly into paint without any pre-sketches at all. Because of this I find “Flesh and Blood” to be perhaps the most honest I have done to date.

The majority of the paintings consist of oils on gesso coated print paper. I developed this method as an extension of my journal writings thus the paintings and the central installation work are, in my mind, one piece.

While creating the vocabulary for “Flesh and Blood” I chose to depict the human form in a way that seemed more in line with my mental state and other conceptual themes I wanted to explore than the idealized bodies of my past work could communicate. A chance encounter at the DeYoung Art Museum in Golden Gate Park with a stunningly beautiful woman supplied another important visual element for this series. She was in a wheelchair with both arms amputated at the mid-biceps, bone protruded from the tapered muscles at the end of each of her amputated appendages. To me, as a muse, she was perfect and transcendent.

“Flesh and Blood” is catharsis. From the flesh and blood letting needed for the installation work to the subjects I gave form to in paint culminating in the destruction of 15 years worth of writings. An artist in midlife contemplating the waste, sloth and slowly approaching mortality of his life framed by moments of self flagellation. My figures seem to have a resigned appreciation of their own personal hells.

"Flesh and Blood" wouldn't be flesh and blood without it.  Much harder to get than blood.  My flesh of course.

Blood Draw Day 2

Double the amount of blood drawn this time, 220 cc but same number of filled vials.  I filled them more, better look.

"Flesh and Blood" Installation Piece

Shots taken by the gentleman that is building the cage structure that will be attached to the table and will be the support from which I will suspend the 300 or so vials of blood and flesh.

"The Wretched" a self portrait

Proper scan and done, done.

Left a Mark

Thank you Trent, I can always count on you for inspiration. "Left a Mark" makes so much sense to me right now.

"The Wretched" Done

Done, although still a crap camera shot not a proper scan. That later when dry.

The Wretched Day 4

A good example of an underpainting and an over glazed figure side by side. Shows how I achieve flesh tone.

Had my first drawing of blood today for the installation piece "Flesh and Blood." About 120 cc which equaled about 52 small vials. Only have about 250 more vials which means about 600 cc more. The metal fabricator contacted me to approval for the final figures so all seems to be working out and on schedule. Getting this beast back to LA will be another matter.

The installation work "Flesh and Blood" will consist of journals 28 and my flesh and blood, 300 vials in all. The journals shown here are in approx. formation as on the table portion of the work.

"The Wretched" Day 3

Working shadows a little. Background under painting in. Will go for a cracked concrete, rust and lime stream marks coming down look.

Long Day

Still working on the article for 2D Artist Magazine. Deadline Friday. Just sent all the images, re-scanned, color corrected and cleaned. Should be good, due out in Dec.

"Fly" Done and Scanned

Finished and with proper scan. "Fly" "10X10" oils on gessoed print paper, 2009. Now available through Bert Green Fine Art.

"Wretched" Day 2

"The Wretched" day 2. Still working on the under painting. The back ground will make or break this one.

My Favorite Quote Regarding F&B

"Takes some guts to give full expression to your darkest imaginings (unless your darkest imagings are darker still). Having said that your recent output seems a bit brighter and jollier than suff you were doing a while back. Its like your characters have resigned themselves to being stuck in hell, and have decided to swagger around and enjoy themselves anyway."

Just finished "Fly" so it's wet and not scanned. This is just a quick shot with the hand held camera of questionable quality.

3:01 am

Just finished day one of work on "The Wretched".

"Fly on the Wall" is drying. Should be able to do over glazes in a day or two.

For the record, "The Wretched" is the piece that looked back at me. The first work that truly scared me.

"I Love This Shot..

From the "Damned II" show, thank you Adam and Les!

Abort Magazine

Look for me in upcoming stuff from ABORT magazine. I will keep you posted.

"113" WIP

Hand held camera at 2:00am Under painting mind you.

I will be a part of the DAMNED II show in Detroit on the 29th. Along with Marilyn Manson, HR Giger and about 140 or so additional artists from all over the world. It should be on HELL of a bast as well as some fiendish art!

Peter Romberg

As you may or may not know, I rarely stray from topic here on this blog but I am compelled to do so now.

Peter Romberg has his second solo show at Bert Green Fine Art in Los Angeles until the 24th of this month. I LOVE his work and encourage anyone within driving distance to check out his work. Style and content wise he hit me dead on.
It is the LAST few days of the show.

"Pin Cushion "Working Title) WIP

Second night on this little guy. They say the problem child is the brightest.

"Pin Cushion" (Working Title)

Just started work on this one last night. This is the pre-sketch.

Bert Green Fine Art

I have been going on and on about the work but I need to step back and direct your attention to Bert Green Fine Art in Los Angeles, CA. Bert Has championed my work for a long time and without him this show would not have happened. There you will find all the work to this show and if you are so inclined, can pre-purchase ahead of the opening. Simply contact him for more details

"Mother Issues" Scanned

All done, done.
"Mother Issues" oils on wood panel "14 1/8X18 1/8" 2009

Home Stretch, 5 (4 really) Months to Go

Not a worry.

I will have enough work. Kicking into high gear on that front. The only thing that is not started yet is the blood drawing and I need a lot of blood drawn. That is the only part of this show that I get edgy about.

I have been painting for over 20 years.

In all those years I have done a few works that I believed were as close as I could come to what I wanted to evoke. I can say with all honesty and humility that this last work I have prepped is the first time a piece has looked back at me and has given me the willies. I suppose it is because this mirror reflects very darkly. Shit.

As mentioned, this is a painting that I have in cue and won't be finished for awhile.

2D Artist Magazine

I will have an article in 2D Artist Magazine this December featuring my sketch work.

New Work

I was given some assistance this week so I was able to JAM in studio. Lined up a bunch of new work. Looks like I am still behind schedule and it would appear that 25 paintings and one installation is what I will have available for the show. Unless I am able to pull the proverbial monkey out of my ass. Which I have been known to do.

"Mother Issues" Done!

I finally finished this beast. Perhaps the subject hindered my progress. Humm.....
Taken quickly with a camera, not a scan. I will scan once dry.

ImagineFX Magazine Update

Just got word from the editors at ImageFX Magazine that I will be in issue 54, going on sale 9 Feb in the UK and 2/3 weeks later in the rest of the world.

I LOVE this mag and was blown away when then they contacted me to be a featured artist.

Proposed Changes to Mom

Mom needed to change direction and this is the proposed direction I will take.

I am Jack's Self Loathing

"Mother" Day 6

Keep in mind that this is all an under painting.
Over this I will apply multiple layers of glazes. That is why the colors seem off. The purples are meant to be seen through a glaze of Burnt Sienna, the background awash in umbers and blues. Details lines added, reflective colors added and strong highlights as well. Still a ways to go.

"Mother Issues" (Working Title) Day 3

Day 3. Fu*^ing tired as hell!
The definition of passion, however, is doing what compels you beyond your physical and mental limitations. True this.

"Mother Issues" (Working Title) Day 2

This will be the under painting. I will add glazes, anywhere from 2 to 4 layers over the figure and the background which as you see is always done last.

1:20 am "Mother Issues"

"Mother Issues" Started..........

"Puddle" Oils on wood panel, 2009

Just completed "Puddle" the second "head" piece and the last. Moving on to "Mother Issues."

On another front, the vast amount of my own blood needed for the center installment piece has been a problem until now. Now I have all the parts.

"Dead Weight"

5X7 Oils on gessoed wood panel. 2009
