Artist Statement

Flesh and Blood”

“Flesh and Blood” was the hardest and yet easiest series for me to paint of my entire career. Hardest due to the brutal nature in which I viewed the mirror. Easiest in so far as the flow was natural, unstudied and for the first time born of only my sketches. My past work was usually the result of working from photographs or working directly into paint without any pre-sketches at all. Because of this I find “Flesh and Blood” to be perhaps the most honest I have done to date.

The majority of the paintings consist of oils on gesso coated print paper. I developed this method as an extension of my journal writings thus the paintings and the central installation work are, in my mind, one piece.

While creating the vocabulary for “Flesh and Blood” I chose to depict the human form in a way that seemed more in line with my mental state and other conceptual themes I wanted to explore than the idealized bodies of my past work could communicate. A chance encounter at the DeYoung Art Museum in Golden Gate Park with a stunningly beautiful woman supplied another important visual element for this series. She was in a wheelchair with both arms amputated at the mid-biceps, bone protruded from the tapered muscles at the end of each of her amputated appendages. To me, as a muse, she was perfect and transcendent.

“Flesh and Blood” is catharsis. From the flesh and blood letting needed for the installation work to the subjects I gave form to in paint culminating in the destruction of 15 years worth of writings. An artist in midlife contemplating the waste, sloth and slowly approaching mortality of his life framed by moments of self flagellation. My figures seem to have a resigned appreciation of their own personal hells.

Double the amount of blood drawn this time, 220 cc but same number of filled vials.  I filled them more, better look.

Blood

Had my first drawing of blood today for the installation piece "Flesh and Blood." About 120 cc which equaled about 52 small vials. Only have about 250 more vials which means about 600 cc more. The metal fabricator contacted me to approval for the final figures so all seems to be working out and on schedule. Getting this beast back to LA will be another matter.

Journals







The installation work "Flesh and Blood" will consist of journals 28 and my flesh and blood, 300 vials in all. The journals shown here are in approx. formation as on the table portion of the work.

"Fly on the Wall" is drying. Should be able to do over glazes in a day or two.

For the record, "The Wretched" is the piece that looked back at me. The first work that truly scared me.

Peter Romberg has his second solo show at Bert Green Fine Art in Los Angeles until the 24th of this month. I LOVE his work and encourage anyone within driving distance to check out his work. Style and content wise he hit me dead on.

Not a worry.

I will have enough work. Kicking into high gear on that front. The only thing that is not started yet is the blood drawing and I need a lot of blood drawn. That is the only part of this show that I get edgy about.

Mirror

I have been painting for over 20 years.

In all those years I have done a few works that I believed were as close as I could come to what I wanted to evoke. I can say with all honesty and humility that this last work I have prepped is the first time a piece has looked back at me and has given me the willies. I suppose it is because this mirror reflects very darkly. Shit.

As mentioned, this is a painting that I have in cue and won't be finished for awhile.

2D Artist Magazine

New Work

I was given some assistance this week so I was able to JAM in studio. Lined up a bunch of new work. Looks like I am still behind schedule and it would appear that 25 paintings and one installation is what I will have available for the show. Unless I am able to pull the proverbial monkey out of my ass. Which I have been known to do.

Keep in mind that this is all an under painting.
Over this I will apply multiple layers of glazes. That is why the colors seem off. The purples are meant to be seen through a glaze of Burnt Sienna, the background awash in umbers and blues. Details lines added, reflective colors added and strong highlights as well. Still a ways to go.
